The official synopsis for the novel from King’s website reads “Evil forces residing in the Overlook - which has a long and violent history - covet young Danny for his precognitive powers and exploit Jack’s weaknesses to try to claim the boy.” This explains the “shine” to be a psychic ability that allows Jack and his son Danny to experience the feelings and thoughts of others, including ghosts. The “shining” or the “shine” is an ability that some of King’s characters have throughout his novels, most notably Jack and Danny Torrance in The Shining. But exactly what is “shining” in the Stephen King world, and why are fans of Hulu’s Castle Rock bringing it up now? When you think of King you probably imagine the horror of It or Carrie, but one of his most iconic works is The Shining, and references to it have become embedded in modern pop culture. Whether it was through a novel, film, or just an offhand reference, you’ve probably come across something created by the legendary author Stephen King.

But Big Machine is centrally concerned with doubt: the way it can cripple those marginalised from society by race and poverty (arriving at the library, Ricky and his fellow recruits fear to sit at the grand table laid for them, half-convinced they're not guests but the “help”), and the danger of those – cult leaders, true believers – who don’t have enough of it. He is the author of a short-story collection, Slapboxing with Jesus and three novels, The Ecstatic, Big Machine and The Devil in Silver. There are also echoes of Neil Gaiman in the portrayal of an America alive with the mythologies and tragedies of its many peoples. There are chases – of a sort (Ricky can’t drive and has a gammy knee) – and even some explosions, but the narrative priorities are motive and consequence rather than incident. It sounds like the start of a madcap adventure, but LaValle keeps the pace measured and the tone reflective and sardonic. Her book thus reveals what happens when the private experience of a transgenderist is shifted to the public sphere and thereby marketed as a hybrid spectacle for the curious gaze of the general audience. Sherry Velasco argues that the ways in which literary, theatrical, iconographic, and cinematic productions have transformed Erauso’s life experience into a public spectacle show how transgender narratives expose and manipulate spectators’ fears and desires. This theoretically informed study analyzes the many ways in which the “Lieutenant Nun” has been constructed, interpreted, marketed, and consumed by both the dominant and divergent cultures in Europe, Latin America, and the United States from the seventeenth century to the present. Catalina de Erauso (1592-1650) was a Basque noblewoman who, just before taking final vows to become a nun, escaped from the convent at San Sebastián, dressed as a man, and, in her own words, 'went hither and thither, embarked, went into port, took to roving, slew, wounded, embezzled, and roamed about. But what if these long-held beliefs were all wrong? In this stunning, powerful, and ultimately persuasive book, Rodney Stark, one of the most highly regarded sociologists of religion and the bestselling author of The Rise of Christianity, argues that some of our most firmly held ideas about history, ideas that paint the Catholic Church in the least positive light are, in fact, fiction. As we all know and as many of our well-established textbooks have argued for decades, the Inquisition was one of the most frightening and bloody chapters in Western history, Pope Pius XII was anti-Semitic and rightfully called "Hitler's Pope," the Dark Ages were a stunting of the progress of knowledge to be redeemed only by the secular spirit of the Enlightenment, and the religious Crusades were an early example of the rapacious Western thirst for riches and power. When a single mother turns up dead at the bottom of a river, soon after a teenage girl suffered the same fate, long buried secrets emerge. Though because of this with so many characters it took me a while to get into the story, but once I had it became more interesting. My Opinion: I did not enjoy this novel quite as much as The Girl On The Train, but I think it was always going to be hard to follow! The theme of Into The Water is an interesting one and told from an unusual viewpoint with every character speaking for themselves.
